ARLINGTON, Va. -- Is social media becoming an addiction? If you are a teenager and addicted to social media, you’re not alone.

“They are addicted to checking our devices before we fall asleep and then waking up to check their devices,” said Jeanetta Thigpen, parent.

“We have started to have morning rituals. We go to our room and lay our phone down. Some kids stay up for a week without it,” she added.

With the number of children and teens with social media addiction reaching epidemic proportions, more parents are speaking out about it.

“It has started to turn into a habit that we cannot break. They are comparing their lives to other people,” said Thigpen.

Results showed teens with social media addiction are about 20 times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, and, according to a new study, "it could be the biggest driving factor behind the recent uptick in the rate of diagnosed attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder among children and adolescents."

It’s why Dr. Ian Jones from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said the new study is a warning.

“They’re talking about an epidemic of social media,” he said.

At a time when teens are stressed out and facing everything from loneliness to bullying, it’s easy to see why ADHD and social media addiction go hand-in-hand, according to Jones.

“If you’re online, you’re talking to another person. Any of those stories you told someone else, your feelings, those take over -- and when you’re on your phones, you’re using your phones,” he said.

Jones said the findings are “pretty compelling” and parents should encourage their children to be more connected but do so in moderation.

“There’s the one eye and then the other eye,” he said.

In June, a survey from the American Psychological Association found more than one in four teens say they suffer from social media addiction.
